Post Election Meltdown

Over the past month or two I’ve been watching Gilmore Girls and was planning on posting all my hot takes, but, well, life comes at you hard. So here’s my shitty election take:

There’s this old George Carlin joke: you ever notice that everyone driving slower than you is an idiot and everyone driving faster than you is a maniac? You’re always the most right person you know because ideology is naturalizing. Whatever you believe is just so goddamn right, isn’t it?

That being said, this isn’t some shitty both sides argument.

This was an election where facts just did not matter. The good business party elected a man with multiple bankruptcies and failing businesses. The party that would give other people shit for not wearing flag pins elected a draft dodger who spent a week insulting the parents of a fallen soldier. The moral majority elected a proven liar who is on trial for raping a child.

The only thing that mattered was that Donald Trump ran a campaign based on racism. The weird thing is that if Donald Trump would have ran like a normal Republican and kept his racism to a dog whistle volume, it probably wouln’t have worked out for him. His past instances of racially discriminating at his buildings would have been an actual scandal for any other Republican who takes such pains to court the white supremacist vote but maintain plausible deniability.

However, Donald Trump led with racism. He promised to discriminate. This election turned out to be a referendum on how many white people in Florida and Ohio cared about minorities and it turned out to be not enough.

Yes, the electoral college was created to give a disproportionate amount of power to rural landowners (slave owners) and considering the Republicans have only won the popular vote once in the last seven elections, it seems to be doing a real good job.

And yes, technically electors could not vote for whom their states voted for. (In fact, there was a Trump supporter who said he was going to cast his electoral college vote for Trump regardless of the outcome and just pay the fine. Had this not been the darkest timeline, that might have been the controversy that actually ends it.) But considering most of the batshit crazy things that have happened on the Republican side this year, it seems unlikely for that scenario to happen. Still though…

I’m running out of trite, obvious things to say for my own benefit, but to bring it back to my initial point, other people’s viewpoints don’t make sense and no one changes their minds in one argument, if ever. So, liberals, grow a spine, don’t tell oppressed people to be nicer to their oppressors, because they have NO INTEREST in returning the favor.

Stay tuned for Gilmore Girls hot takes because it reminds me of a better time and maybe a list of Twilight Zone episodes to watch while they remain fiction.
